It does so on the basis of certain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amskv.sepa.gov.rs\/kriterijumi.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criteria.<\/a><\/p><p>However, the criteria that you can find today on the Agency\u2019s website differ from those presented to citizens in the Report of the Environmental Protection Agency published on September 7, 2020.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>Thus, due to the increasement of the upper limits, the air containing over 40 \u03bcg\/m3 PM 2.5 particles is no longer considered <strong>\u201cpolluted\u201d<\/strong> but <strong>\u201cacceptable\u201d<\/strong>. Likewise, if the air contains 50,0001 \u03bcg\/m3 of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), it is now considered<strong> \u201cexcellent\u201d<\/strong>, not just <strong>\u201cgood\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":2580} --><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2618 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reri.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Air_Pollution_index_SRB-vs-EU-01-1-1024x609.png\" alt=\"Air_Pollution_index_SRB vs EU\" width=\"1024\" height=\"609\" \/><\/figure><p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":2581} --><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2619 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reri.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Air_Pollutin_index_SRB-vs-EU-NO2-01-1024x616.png\" alt=\"Air_Pollutin_index_SRB vs EU - NO2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"616\" \/><\/figure><p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><h4>Why did the Environmental Protection Agency decide to change these criteria?<\/h4><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><h4>Based on which regulations?<\/h4><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>RERI and BOS (Belgrade Open School) hereby point to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/airindex.eea.europa.eu\/Map\/AQI\/Viewer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the criteria for air quality assessment applied by the European Environment Agency<\/a> (European Union agencies), which differ significantly from the criteria used by the Environmental Protection Agency, of which Serbia is a cooperating state.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>Namely, in 2019, the air <b>in all agglomerations<\/b> (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Ni\u0161, Bor, U\u017eice, Kosjeri\u0107, Smederevo and Pan\u010devo) was <b>excessively polluted<\/b> due to the <b>high concentration of PM10 and (or) PM 2.5 particles<\/b>, a comparative overview criteria for these particles- is presented below.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":2582,\"align\":\"center\",\"width\":610,\"height\":371} --><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2620 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reri.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Air_Pollution_indexes_SRB-vs-EU-01.png\" alt=\"Air_Pollution_indexes_SRB vs EU\" width=\"1008\" height=\"615\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":2583,\"align\":\"center\",\"width\":598,\"height\":364} --><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2621 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reri.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Air_Pollution_indexes_SRB-vs-EU-02.png\" alt=\"Air_Pollution_indexes_SRB vs EU\" width=\"1008\" height=\"615\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>Particulate matter with a size of less than 2.5 micrometers are known as PM 2.5 particles. According to the World Health Organization, these particles, due to their size, pose a great danger to health, because they stay in the air for a long time and can penetrate into the bloodstream and lungs, where they cause major health problems. According to the latest report \u2013 The State of Global Air 2020, air pollution was the fourth leading risk factor for premature death in the world, accounting for almost 12% of all deaths, with more than 6.67 million in 2019 alone.<\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>In Serbia, according to the data of the World Health Organization, due to exposure to an excessive concentration of PM2.5 particles, 3585 inhabitants of Serbia died prematurely, half of which were citizens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reri.org.rs\/vazduh-ubija\/\">Belgrade.<\/a><\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p><p>We find it interesting that a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sepa.gov.rs\/download\/izv\/Vazduh_2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cnew-old\u201d<\/a>\u00a0report appeared on the agency\u2019s website, which lacks the information that <b>the results of automatic monitoring from the local network of the City of Belgrade were not submitted to the Agency despite several requests<\/b>, to which RERI and BOS have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reri.org.rs\/en\/it-will-get-worse-before-it-gets-better-review-of-the-annual-report-on-the-air-quality-in-the-republic-of-serbia-in-2019-2\/\">already pointed.<\/a><\/p><p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":2584,\"align\":\"wide\"} --><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reri.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/kompatracija-izvestaja-01-1024x225.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure><p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ada9a15 uokvireno elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ada9a15\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-extended\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b4a1540 sc_layouts_column_icons_position_left\" data-id=\"b4a1540\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-339e465 naslov5 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"339e465\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Why<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> did the Agency change the criteria for air quality assessment?
