The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the air quality in Serbia and reduction of air pollution and carbon footprint in cities with extensive industrial activities.
Energy intensive industries highly contribute to CO2 emissions of the Republic of Serbia in the energy sector and industrial processes and production. Apart from the carbon footprint the high intensive industry heavily influences the air quality in Serbia. Being exposed to environmental and health impacts of air pollution, some cities in Serbia are literally “sacrificed zones” – extremely contaminated areas where vulnerable and marginalized groups bear a disproportionate burden of the health, human rights and environmental consequences of exposure to pollution and hazardous substances. Smederevo and Bor are direct examples of sacrificed zones in Serbia, since these cities are permanently exposed to pollutants from industrial sources, which is why project activities were focused on addressing the industrial emissions in these two cities.
The objectives of the project are to:
- Increase transparency and accountability of public authorities and industries that will lead to responsible and sustainable air protection and climate policies;
- Establish independent monitoring over activities and policies for prevention and reduction of industrial air pollution and GHG emissions;
- Improve climate and air protection legal and policy framework on local and national level.
- Increase public awareness on the impacts of industry on air pollution and climate change that will put additional pressure on the authorities responsible for air protection.
This project is implemented from July 2023 to June 2024, with the support of the European Climate Foundation.
