On April 9, 2024. as part of the regional project TERPEIS BALKANS – Triggering Emissions Reductions in the Power and Energy Intensive Sector, RERI organized a workshop on emission pathways aligned with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C in the context of Serbia.

We gathered representatives from relevant state and international institutions, the academic community, and the civil sector to discuss and gain a clear understanding of how to effectively approach the further development of policies aimed at aligning with the requirements set forth in the Paris Agreement.

The  Climate Analytics organisation developed and presented national emission pathways compatible with limiting global warming to 1.5°C, adapting global Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The presented pathways have the potential to serve as guidelines for policymakers, allowing them to align policies with the goals of the Paris Agreement and serve as a roadmap for emission reductions at the economy-wide level by 2050.

During the workshop, the existing strategic framework, national policies, goals, and obligations of Serbia in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change were presented, along with the level of their alignment with the goal of limiting the temperature rise to 1.5°C. The focus of the discussion was on the possibilities and ways to overcome the barriers related to setting more ambitious climate goals.

The TERPEIS BALKANS project is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).
